Matthew didn’t always plan on a career in construction. Early on, he just knew he liked working with his hands and learning by doing. When MAREK visited his high school, that interest became an opportunity to explore the trades.
Matthew joined MAREK in October 2022 as a Helper on the San Antonio Commercial team. After high school, he started working in the field with Production Superintendent Gabriel G. and Project Manager Oscar J. His curiosity soon grew into a real career.
Before MAREK, Matthew was already learning about the industry. In high school, he took part in the TCCI Construction Career Day through Medina Valley ISD. After joining MAREK, he stayed involved by helping with Construction Career Days and volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club Trades Day. This gave him a chance to give back and introduce other students to the trades, just as he was introduced to them.
Growing on the Job
When asked why he chose construction, Matthew keeps it simple.
“I liked working with my hands and learning new things every day.”
Through MAREK’s Craft Development program, Matthew has continued to build both skill and confidence. Learning from experienced coaches and working alongside seasoned partners has allowed him to take on more challenging tasks and push him further than he expected.
“I’ve learned a lot from my coaches and partners and had the opportunity to grow by working on new and more difficult tasks.”
As time went on, Matthew saw this as more than a job.
“I thought about what I wanted to do and realized I really liked my work and the people around me. They taught me so much and made it feel less like work and more like hanging out with friends.”
Support that Matters
Matthew says he’s grown because his leaders encourage him to try new things and keep learning.
“I’ve been provided a lot of opportunities to learn and grow. Any time I’ve wanted to try something new, I’ve had the support of my bosses.”
That support has helped him build confidence in the job and see what’s possible for his future.
When asked what mindset helps in construction, his advice is simple.
“Be open, be willing to learn, and always look to improve.”
If he could give advice to himself on his first day, he’d keep it practical.
“I’d tell myself to stay hydrated and do my best.”
A Bit of Fun
If Matthew’s toolbelt could talk, it might offer him some honest feedback.
“It would probably tell me to take better care of my tools and stop losing them.”
Outside of work, Matthew likes spending time with friends and training and competing in jiu-jitsu.
Looking Forward
Today, Matthew works as a Drywall Mechanic on San Antonio’s Commercial team and continues to build his career. He’s excited to represent MAREK at the ABC National Craft Competition in Salt Lake City with Armando G. from the Houston team. He’s grateful for this chance, which shows the time, effort, and support that have helped him grow.
Matthew’s story shows what’s possible when early exposure, hands-on learning, and good support come together. We’re proud to have him on our team and can’t wait to see what he does next, both at work and beyond.
