Job Creation: Bass Pro Shops gives local contractors business

HARLINGEN — Half of the subcontractors building the multimillion-dollar, 150,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops store are from the Rio Grande Valley or have offices here.

Of 20 subcontractors hired by Bass Pro for the job, 10 are located in cities from Harlingen to McAllen.

These businesses are building and installing everything from concrete sections, flooring and roofing to lighting and air conditioning.

One local subcontractor is Harlingen-based Commercial Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors.

Marek Service Awards Dinner

It is that time of year again, it's time to recognize our employees who have been employed at Marek Brothers for a minimum of 10 years.

As you may know we have been giving our journeymen the opportunity to take the NCCER exam. In doing this we were working towards a proud and educated workforce. Our mission is to build a safe, productive, and sustainable workforce of craft professionals. I am happy to update everyone and let them know that now 30% of our workforce is NCCER Certified and that number will only go up as the testing continues.

The Dewitt Churchwell Memorial Invitational

MBS San Antonio held its 21st annual customer appreciation golf tournament on October 15th at Canyon Springs Golf Club. The tournament is appropriately named "The Dewitt Churchwell Memorial Invitational". We were pleased to host over ninety customers and friends. The weather was excellent, our staff did a nice job of welcoming our guests and taking care of the details. All in attendance enjoyed a great day of golf and fellowship and we raised over $5000 for the scholarship fund created in Dewitt's name.

2010 Helper Trainee Graduation

We have completed training our second graduating class of OJT Helpers. Ten trainees graduated this year bringing our total number of graduates up to twenty two. We celebrated at Mamacitas Mexican Restaurant where we had our graduates and their coaches in attendance. Katrina Kersch was able to join us and we all had a good time. The graduates recieved their completion certificate, plaque and gift card. These trainees are now able to begin their journeyman training. We expect great things from this group.

Marek Service Awards

Our Service Awards Banquest for our employees was held on September 1, 2010 at the Barn Door. We would like to thank those awarded for their years of service and their hard work and dedication.

English as a Second Language

In 2010 we partnered with San Antonio Independent School District to establish an ESL class for our employees. We have run through two successful semesters this year with 33 of our employees taking advantage of this opportunity.

National Center for Construction Education and Research

On March 11, 2010 we began the NCCER Certification Process, since that date we certified 15 journeyman. Upon the successful completion of the assessment, each participant will receive the NCCER appropriate credentials. We are very proud of all of the participants and their efforts.

UTSA CS&M Estimating II Class Visit

On Tuesday, the 17th of April, MBS San Antonio hosted a group of Construction Science and Management Students from the University of Texas at San Antonio. The students are in a class titled "Estimating II."

MBS is a founding member of the CIAC (Construction Industry Advisory Council: for the CS&M program at UTSA. At a recent career fair, Professor Pardis Pishdad-Bozorgi visted our booth that was attended by Stacy Gunderson, our WFD Corrdinator.
