Moody Gardens is a well-known destination in Galveston that combines education, entertainment, and hospitality. Phase V of the development expanded the resort’s offerings with a new hotel tower, convention center, restaurant, and supporting facilities. The scope of work required the complete renovation and addition of multiple structures, including a nine-story north tower with 125 guest rooms, lavish suites, and new public spaces.
The project demanded extensive detailing, precise coordination, and strict adherence to schedule. Work continued while the existing hotel remained occupied, requiring careful planning to minimize disruptions. During construction, two tropical storms caused significant flooding, forcing the removal and replacement of drywall, insulation, and metal framing throughout the nine-story structure without altering the completion schedule.
MAREK partnered with Gilbane to deliver drywall assemblies, ceilings, acoustical systems, paint, and a wide range of specialty finishes. Our team also provided manpower and logistical support for material handling and vertical transportation.
The work included:
- Installation of cold-formed metal framing engineered to withstand hurricane-force winds up to 120 mph.
- Construction of multi-layer gypsum board assemblies to achieve fire and sound ratings.
- Detailed drywall and ceiling work in guest rooms, corridors, and public spaces, featuring curved soffits, light troughs, planter boxes, and radius designs.
- Finishes that balanced durability with visual appeal, supporting the architect’s tropical and modern design themes.
- Coordinated execution within occupied areas and newly built facilities, ensuring safety and comfort for guests and staff.
Despite weather setbacks and schedule constraints, the project was completed on time, with more than 240,000 man-hours contributed by MAREK’s workforce. The new facilities expanded Moody Gardens into a premier conference and resort destination, adding to its reputation as one of Galveston’s most iconic attractions.
