Challenge

The Lanier Theological Library needed a grand staircase ceiling that would embody the intricate elegance of a Euro-style Gothic design while meeting modern construction standards. The project faced complex hurdles: crafting delicate arches, ribbed vaults, and tracery with precision; ensuring structural integrity; managing spatial challenges caused by the room’s square layout and central column; and balancing beauty with durability, functionality, and acoustics.

Solution

We brought this vision to life using Armstrong’s Plasterform Glass Reinforced Gypsum (GRG), a lightweight, durable material ideal for detailed curved designs. Our team installed a specialized Armstrong drywall grid sub-ceiling to provide precise structural support and placement for 236 GRG pieces, including 20 custom elements. Collaboration was key: acoustical experts prepared the foundation, prefabrication craftsmen pre-cut panels for seamless fitting, and our framers and finishers meticulously installed and finished each piece. The outcome is a stunning Euro-Gothic ceiling that perfectly marries artistry with engineering, transforming the space into a timeless architectural masterpiece.
