St. David’s Hospital, a leading medical center in Austin, sought to transform its exterior courtyard into a five-story interior atrium that would serve as the centerpiece of the facility. The project involved enclosing an outdoor space within the existing hospital structure and creating a new skylit lobby that would bring light and warmth to patients, visitors, and staff.
This conversion presented several challenges, including working within an active hospital, erecting scaffolding in a tight footprint, and enclosing the courtyard without disrupting ongoing operations. Achieving the desired architectural vision required a high level of coordination, precision, and sensitivity to the hospital environment.
MAREK partnered with Skanska to bring the design to life through detailed drywall assemblies, ceiling systems, and acoustical solutions. Our team developed a plan to safely scaffold and enclose the courtyard, allowing crews to complete the intricate gypsum board work while maintaining hospital access and safety standards.
By maintaining close communication with the general contractor and hospital staff, the team minimized disruptions and delivered a smooth transition from construction to completion. The finished atrium now serves as a bright and welcoming space that enhances the patient and visitor experience while reflecting the craftsmanship and coordination behind its construction.
The project’s success was recognized with the ABC Construction Merit Award in 2010.
